The question that underlies this book will challenge us strongly in the coming years. We have to bear in mind however that we are part of a biological cycle. I am convinced that the proximity to animals, even to the ones we use for food, provides more understanding of their needs than when we turn away from them. Only if we raise the living and educational standard of all humans the awareness will rise, and this is the best help for animal welfare. Moreover we must demand a species-appropriate keeping based on leading-edge science. And we should expect from others only what we are ready to contribute ourselves.
Yet there remains a dangerous logic hard to breach: that the strongest prevails. This does however not exclude the risk that in the end the strongest destroys himself.
